Keep your jobs off job boards you didn't choose

Why your jobs appear on boards like Indeed without you posting them, what you can do to limit it, and how to get a scraped listing taken down.

Your job turns up on Indeed, and nobody on your team put it there. This is scraping: some job boards crawl company careers sites, pull the openings they find, and republish them to fill out their own listings. It's common, it's not coming from Tellent Recruitee, and it isn't a sign that something is misconfigured in your account.

You have real options — from reducing how easily your jobs are found, to keeping a specific role off your careers site entirely. What you can't do is switch scraping off outright, so this article is candid about what each option actually achieves.

Note: Changing your careers site settings requires access to company settings in your hiring role. Changing a job's status requires permission to manage that job.

Why your jobs appear on boards you didn't choose

When a job is Published, it goes live on your careers site as a public web page. Anything public can be crawled — by search engines, and by job boards that build their listings from other people's sites.

A scraped listing looks like a normal posting to candidates, but it behaves differently from one you published on purpose:

  • It isn't connected to Tellent Recruitee, so we can't edit or remove it.

  • It won't come down automatically when you close the job, unlike the postings you sent from the Promote tab.

  • It's usually a free, low-visibility listing rather than a promoted one.

Tip: Scraped listings often outlive the role and keep sending applications to a dead link. If you're closing a job that you know has been scraped, it's worth asking the board to remove its copy at the same time — see Get a scraped listing removed.

Option 1: Turn off careers site indexing

This stops search engines from showing your careers site in their results, which is how many scrapers find you in the first place. Your careers site keeps working normally — candidates with the link, and anyone arriving from a job board you chose, are unaffected.

2. Unselect Careers site indexing.

Important: This also removes your careers site from Google and other search engines, so candidates won't find your jobs by searching. If organic traffic is a meaningful source of applications for you, weigh that against the scraping you're trying to stop.

Note: Turning off indexing makes your jobs harder to discover. It doesn't block a scraper that already knows your careers site URL, because those crawlers don't have to respect indexing preferences. Treat this as reducing the odds, not closing the door.

Option 2: Set the job to "Use internally"

This is the most reliable option, and the one to reach for when a specific role must not appear on public boards. A job set to Use internally never goes on your careers site at all, so there's no public page for anyone to scrape. People with the direct link can still view it and apply.

1. Click Jobs in the left menu.

2. Find the job and click the colored dot and job status in the lower-right corner of the job card.

3. Select Use internally.

Share the job by sending the direct link to the people you want to reach.

Note: Use internally jobs still count as active jobs in your subscription, since you can keep receiving applications. See Change your job's status.

Tip: This is the right setting for confidential searches — a replacement hire, or a role you haven't announced internally yet — where a scraped listing wouldn't just be untidy but genuinely a problem.

Option 3: Publish to an internal page

If you want employees to browse openings while keeping them off the public web, put them on an internal page. Internal pages are part of your careers site but reachable only by direct link — they're left out of the sitemap, so search engines don't index them.

This suits internal mobility and referral programmes, where you want a proper listing page rather than passing links around one by one.

See Internal pages and Internal jobs on internal pages for how to set these up.

Get a scraped listing removed

Once a board has published its own copy of your job, that listing belongs to them — we can't reach into it. Ask them directly.

1. Find the listing on the job board and note its URL.

2. Contact the board's support team. Say that you're the employer, that you didn't submit the posting, and that you'd like it removed.

3. Include the listing URL and the name of your company so they can match it.

Most major boards, Indeed included, will take down a listing at the employer's request.

Tip: If the job is still open and you'd rather have a listing you control than none at all, consider promoting it to that board from the Promote tab instead of removing it. You'll get a posting you can edit and close, and it will come down with the job.

Note: Removal isn't always permanent. If the role is still live on your public careers site, the same board may scrape it again on its next crawl. Pair the removal request with Option 1 or Option 2 if it keeps recurring.

What about disabling the careers site entirely?

You can have your careers site switched off completely — contact our Support team to arrange it. In practice this is rarely the right answer for a scraping problem.

Important: With the careers site disabled, you can no longer post jobs to job boards through Tellent Recruitee, and any postings you've already promoted will return 404 errors — so candidates lose access to the job details behind links that are already out in the world. Only consider this if you're managing job publication entirely outside Tellent Recruitee.

FAQs

Can Tellent Recruitee block a job board from scraping our careers site?

No. A public careers site can be crawled by anyone, and we can't stop a third party from doing so. The options in this article reduce how easily your jobs are found, or keep them off the public site altogether.

Will closing the job remove the scraped listing?

No. Closing a job automatically removes the postings you sent from the Promote tab, but a scraped listing isn't ours to remove — you'll need to ask that board directly.

Does turning off indexing hide jobs I've promoted to boards?

No. Postings you've published to job boards through Tellent Recruitee are unaffected, and candidates can still reach your careers site through those links.

Can candidates still apply to a "Use internally" job?

es, as long as they have the direct job link.

Why is my job on a premium board when I never promoted it there?

It was almost certainly scraped. These listings are free and low-visibility rather than promoted campaigns, and aren't connected to your account.

We turned off indexing and the job is still on Indeed. Why?

Indexing controls whether search engines list your site — it doesn't retroactively remove anything already scraped, and it doesn't stop a crawler that already has your URL. Ask the board to remove the existing listing, and use Use internally for roles that must stay off public boards.
