A name, a photo, or a team member’s rating can shape an opinion before anyone reads a CV. Unbiased hiring in Tellent Recruitee gives you two tools to help prevent that: Anonymous candidates hides personal details, and Fair evaluations hides your team’s ratings until each person adds their own. You choose which stages of which jobs they apply to.
Note: Unbiased hiring is available on the Optimize plan. To turn the features on for your company, you need the Manage company permission, usually an Administrator.
How unbiased hiring works
You set up each feature in two steps, and it only takes effect once you’ve done both. First, turn the feature on for your company. This makes it available in the stage editor, but nothing is hidden yet. Then, enable it on individual pipeline stages. The feature applies only to the stages you select in the jobs you choose.
This lets you run anonymous screening on your sales roles, for example, while leaving your engineering pipeline unchanged.
Tip: If you want every new job to start with unbiased hiring, set it up in a pipeline template instead of job by job. Every job created from that template uses the same stage settings.
Turn on unbiased hiring for your company
Go to Settings > Workflow > Candidate evaluation.
Next to Anonymous candidates or Fair evaluations, click Configure. If you’ve set up the feature before, the button says Edit instead. Select Display the feature and click Save.
Each feature shows its current status under its name, for example Turned off or Enabled in 3 out of 12 jobs, so you can see how widely it’s used at a glance.
Note: Selecting Turn off the feature removes it from the stage editor and switches it off everywhere it was in use. Candidates hidden by Anonymous candidates become visible again.
Enable the features on a pipeline stage
Once a feature is turned on, you decide which stages use it. You can do this in a pipeline template, so every job built from it uses the same setup, or in a single job’s pipeline.
In a pipeline template
Go to Settings > Templates > Pipelines and open the template you want to change. Click the edit icon on the stage you want to update. In the Unbiased hiring section, select Anonymous candidates, Fair evaluations, or both, then click Save.
Stages that use either feature show a crossed-out eye icon with the feature names underneath, so you can see your setup without opening each stage.
Note: If the Anonymous candidates checkbox is grayed out, the feature hasn’t been turned on for your company yet. Ask your admin to turn it on.
In a single job
Open the job and click Edit, then go to Workflow. In the Pipeline section, click the edit icon on the stage you want to update and click Edit stage to confirm. Select the unbiased hiring options you want and click Save. Then click Publish changes to apply them.
Note: Editing a stage in a single job creates a custom pipeline for that job. Later changes to the pipeline template won’t apply to it.
Fair evaluations
Fair evaluations hides other team members’ ratings and written feedback on a candidate until you add your own. Everyone forms an independent opinion first, which helps reduce groupthink.
What a reviewer sees
On a candidate in a Fair evaluations stage, existing feedback is replaced with a message like 2 hidden evaluations by the Fair evaluations feature. It explains that other team members’ answers are hidden to avoid bias until you evaluate the candidate. When you add your evaluation, you can see the other team members’ evaluations right away.
When hidden evaluations become visible
Evaluations stop being hidden when any of these happens:
You submit your own evaluation for that candidate.
The candidate moves to a stage that doesn’t have Fair evaluations enabled.
You reveal them yourself (see below).
Note: If you share a candidate profile with a sharing link and select All evaluations, anyone with the link can see all evaluations, including hidden ones.
Reveal evaluations without evaluating
Sometimes you need the full picture before you can form your own view, for example when a hiring manager joins a debrief late.
In the Summary section of the candidate’s Evaluation tab, click Reveal for me under Average evaluation score. The Reveal evaluations? dialog warns that once you read other evaluations, you may be less objective. Click Reveal for me to confirm. The evaluations open in a Hidden evaluations window.
Note: You need the Reveal hidden evaluations permission to reveal evaluations. Revealing only affects your own view. Other team members still see the evaluations as hidden until they evaluate or reveal them too.
Important: Fair evaluations also hides data from reporting while it’s active. Evaluation insights show a notice that results are hidden, and scorecards from hidden evaluations aren’t included in candidate summaries.
Anonymous candidates
Anonymous candidates hides identifying information from a candidate’s profile so reviewers can focus on skills and experience. Tellent Recruitee also creates anonymized versions of the CV and cover letter, masking details inside the documents.
Note: AI hides personal details in the candidate’s documents, so some details might not be recognized.
What gets hidden
While a candidate is in a stage with Anonymous candidates enabled, your team can’t see their:
Name, shown masked, for example J. Do∗∗∗
Photo
Email addresses and phone numbers
Gender, nationality, date of birth, and address
Social media links, trimmed to the bare domain
CV and cover letter, replaced with anonymized versions
A banner at the top of the profile says the candidate is anonymous and that their photo, nationality, and gender are hidden from all team members to reduce bias.
What you can’t do with an anonymized candidate
Important: Some actions are unavailable while a candidate is anonymized:
You can’t message them. The Messages tab shows a notice instead.
You can’t schedule events with them. The Schedule button is grayed out.
You can’t merge them with a duplicate profile.
If you need to do any of these, reveal the candidate for yourself or move them to a stage without Anonymous candidates.
Reveal a candidate’s details
Team members with the Reveal anonymous candidates permission can reveal a candidate’s details when they need to, for example to arrange an interview.
Click Reveal for me in the banner at the top of the candidate’s profile. The Your team members will know dialog explains that your team will see that you revealed this candidate, both in the top right of the profile and in the audit logs. Click Reveal for me to confirm.
A Candidate revealed for you confirmation appears, and you can click Hide for me in the banner to mask the profile again. A counter such as 2 team members revealed appears in the banner. Point to it to see exactly who has seen the hidden details.
Tip: If you reveal candidates often and don’t need the reminder, select Don’t ask again in the dialog.
When details become visible to everyone
A candidate stops being anonymous automatically when they:
Move to a pipeline stage that doesn’t have Anonymous candidates enabled
Are disqualified, or requalified afterward
Are assigned to or removed from a job
Example: An anonymous first screening
A retail chain wants its store manager shortlist judged on experience rather than names and photos.
An admin goes to Settings > Workflow > Candidate evaluation and sets both features to Display the feature. In the Retail hiring pipeline template, they enable Anonymous candidates on the Screening stage and Fair evaluations on both Screening and First interview.
Applicants land in Screening with masked names, photos, and anonymized CVs. Three reviewers score them independently, and none can see the others’ ratings until they’ve added their own.
Shortlisted candidates move to First interview. Because that stage doesn’t use Anonymous candidates, their details become visible and the recruiter can email them to book a slot. Evaluations stay hidden there until each interviewer adds their own.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to use both features together?
No. They’re set up separately, so you can turn on only the one you need and apply them to different stages.
Does anonymizing a candidate delete their personal data?
No. The information is hidden from view, not removed. It reappears as soon as the candidate leaves the stage with Anonymous candidates enabled.
Can candidates tell they’ve been anonymized?
No. Anonymization only changes what your team sees inside Tellent Recruitee.
Why can’t I see the unbiased hiring settings?
You need the Manage company permission, and your company needs the Optimize plan. You’ll find the settings in Settings > Workflow > Candidate evaluation.
Who can reveal an anonymized candidate or hidden evaluations?
Anyone whose role includes the Reveal anonymous candidates or Reveal hidden evaluations permission. You can set these per role in Settings > General > Hiring roles, under Candidates.
Will my team know if I reveal a candidate or an evaluation?
Revealing a candidate is visible to your team. It’s shown on the profile and recorded in the audit logs. Revealing evaluations only changes your own view.
