Every job you publish gets its own web address (also called a URL) on your careers site. The address is made from the job title. A long or repetitive title makes the address hard to read.
Tip: You can change the address to something short and descriptive, like …/o/senior-backend-developer, before you share the job or after it’s live. Links you’ve already shared keep working.
Note: You need the Manage jobs permission to edit a job URL. If you don't have access to all jobs, you can only edit the URLs of jobs you've been given access to. Without this permission, the Edit the job URL dialog still opens, but your changes won't save. If Save keeps loading, ask an admin to check your permissions.
How do job URLs work?
A job URL has two parts: your careers site address, which is the same for every job, and the part after /o/, which belongs to that job.
On a Recruitee subdomain: https://yourcompany.recruitee.com/o/job-title
On a custom domain: https://careers.yourcompany.com/o/job-title
Good to know: A subdomain is an address that ends with recruitee.com. A custom domain is your own web address, for example, one that uses your company name.
This article is about the part after /o/. To change your careers site address, see Manage your careers site’s URL and search visibility.
When you create a job, Tellent Recruitee creates the URL from the job title for you. If you change the title later, the URL follows the title and updates to match. Once you edit the URL yourself, it stays as you set it, even if you change the title again.
Edit a job URL
You can edit a job URL from the job editor or from the job page. For draft jobs, use the job editor.
Open the job you want to change, or create a new job.
Click Share at the top of the page.
Next to Job URL, click the pencil icon.
In the Edit the job URL dialog, enter the new URL in the field after your careers site address.
Click Save.
The new URL is active after you save it. If someone opens the old URL, they’re taken to the new one automatically.
Tip: Keep it short and readable. Include the role and, if you hire in several places, the location — for example, customer-success-manager-berlin.
Note: The Share button isn’t available on archived jobs. To change the URL of an archived job, publish it again first.
What can you use in a job URL?
Follow these rules when you choose a job URL:
Use letters from a to z, numbers, and hyphens (-).
Use at least five characters.
Do not use only numbers. For example, 2026-sales-lead works, but 2026 does not.
Use a URL that is not already used by another job in your company.
Spaces are turned into hyphens, and capital letters are saved in lowercase. Accented letters (like é or ü) and other special characters aren’t allowed.
If the URL can’t be saved, you’ll see Uhm, this link is taken. Try again? This message also appears when the URL is shorter than five characters or contains only numbers, so check those rules before picking a different URL.
What happens to the old URL?
Tellent Recruitee remembers every URL a job has had. When someone opens an old URL, they’re taken to the job’s current URL automatically. That means:
Links you’ve already posted on job boards, social media, or in emails keep working.
The old URL takes people to the new one as long as the job is published or internal.
You don’t need to update links you’ve already shared, though it’s a good idea to use the new URL from now on.
Because old URLs keep redirecting, no other job in your company can use them. You can change the job back to one of the URLs it used before.
Important: When you delete a job, its current URL and all its earlier URLs are released. Any links to them stop working, and another job can then use them.
What are some examples of job URL changes?
Shorter links for social media
You post a job called Senior Backend Developer (Elixir) — Remote, Europe. Tellent Recruitee creates a long URL from that title. You change it to backend-developer-elixir so it fits in a LinkedIn post. The long URL you shared earlier in your newsletter still takes candidates to the job.
Reusing a URL for a new version of a job.
You hired a product designer last year, and the old job is archived. The archived job still uses the URL product-designer, so a new job for the same role can’t use it.
You can choose a different URL, such as product-designer-2026. You can also delete the old job to release the URL.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a URL that another company already uses?
Yes. Job URLs only need to be unique within your own company.
Why does it say the link is taken when no other job uses it?
Check that the URL is at least five characters long and isn’t only numbers. If it meets both rules, an earlier version of another job — including an archived one — might have used it. Pick a different URL, or delete the job that used it.
Will changing the job title change the URL?
Only if you’ve never edited the URL yourself. After you edit it, the URL stays the same when you change the title.
Can I customize the URL of a talent pool?
No. Talent pools don’t appear on your careers site, so there’s no URL to edit. They also don’t block job URLs — a job and a talent pool can have the same title.
Can I change the URL of a job in another language?
A job has one URL, created from the title in its primary language. When you edit it, the change applies to all languages.
