Understand admin access and ownership in your organization

The Owner role is now part of the Administrator (admin) role — see what changed, what you'll notice in the app, and why your organization always keeps at least one admin.

Overview

We've simplified how ownership works in your organization. Previously, a single person was the Owner and the only one who could transfer ownership or close the company. Those capabilities now belong to your Admins — so your organization is no longer tied to one individual, and you won't be left stuck if that person leaves.

This article explains what changed, what you'll see in the app, and what (if anything) you need to do.

📌 Note

You don't need to take any action. If you were the owner, you keep all of your access as an admin, and none of your data or settings change.

What changed

Ownership used to be a separate role held by one person. That single owner was the only user who could transfer ownership or request to close the organization. If they left the company without first handing over the role, the organization could be left without an owner, and resolving that often took days.

Now, ownership is no longer a standalone role. Instead:

  • Admins hold the top-level access that used to belong only to the owner.

  • More than one person can be an admin at the same time, so your organization never depends on a single individual.

  • Your organization always keeps at least one admin — the app prevents the last one from being removed.

📌 Tip

Make sure at least two people have Admin access. That way, there's always someone who can manage the organization if a colleague leaves.

What you'll notice

For most people, day-to-day work doesn't change. Here's what's different in the app:

The "Owner" badge is now "Admin"

In your team members list and in your list of companies, the badge that used to read Owner now reads Admin. It's the same top-level access — just a clearer name that can apply to more than one person.

The "Transfer ownership" option is gone

The Account owner section in your company's general settings, which previously included the Transfer ownership button, has been removed. Because ownership is no longer a single role, there's nothing to transfer. Instead, you give or remove Admin access for the people who should have top-level rights from your team member permissions.

You can edit permissions for every admin

Previously, you couldn't edit the owner's permissions. Now you can manage Admin access for any team member, as long as you have Admin access yourself.

You can't remove the last admin

To make sure an organization is never left without someone in charge, the app blocks any action that would remove the last remaining admin — including deactivating them, deleting their account, or removing their Admin access.

If you're the only admin and you try to leave the company, you'll see this dialog:

To continue, give Admin access to another team member first, then repeat the action.

📌 Note

If your organization uses automated user provisioning (SCIM), the same rule applies. An attempt to deactivate the last admin returns the message "Cannot deactivate the last organization owner."

What you need to do

Nothing is required — your current setup keeps working exactly as before.

To be prepared for the future, we recommend:

  1. Go to your team members and review who has Admin access.

  2. Make sure at least two people have it, so account management isn't tied to one person.

  3. When someone with Admin access is leaving, grant the role to a colleague before they go.

📌 Important

Closing an organization is permanent and cannot be undone. It still follows a dedicated process handled together with Tellent — if you need to close your organization, contact our support team.

Examples

A recruiter is promoted and should help manage the account.

Instead of transferring ownership, an existing admin simply grants Admin access to that recruiter. Both people now have full top-level access.

Your only admin is leaving the company.

Before their last day, they grant Admin access to a colleague. Because there's now more than one admin, the organization stays fully managed — and no one gets locked out. If they try to leave first, the app reminds them to hand over access.

FAQs

What happened to the Owner role?

It's no longer a separate role. The capabilities that were exclusive to the owner now belong to everyone with Admin access, and the "Owner" badge is now labelled "Admin."

I was the owner. Did I lose any access?

No. You keep all of your previous access as an admin.

Can more than one person have this access now?

Yes. Any number of people can be an admin at the same time.

Why can't I remove or deactivate a certain admin?

Because they're the last admin in the organization. Give Admin access to someone else first, then try again.

How do I close my organization now that there's no owner?

Closing an organization is a permanent action that follows a dedicated process with Tellent. Contact our support team to start it.
